All change at Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council

For the first time in 34 years the Conservatives have taken control of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council.  Half of the council's seats were up for election on 8th May 2008 and two Labour councillors were replaced by British National Party candidates, leaving the council with 18 Conservative councillors, 14 Labour councillors and 2 BNP councillors.  This local result reinforces the importance of WREP's work in ensuring that the needs of individuals and groups are met as well as promoting equality and good race relations across the county.  WREP recognises that lack of understanding and notions of injustice between different groups can lead to problems in the community.  WREP will be meeting with groups and organisations in Nuneaton & Bedworth regularly to help prevent tensions.

Warwickshire Race Equality Partnership was recently commended by the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE).  The CRE praised projects undertaken by WREP including the new protocol for the reporting and recording of racist incidents in Warwickshire and the recent Rural Racism Report conducted in the rural disctricts of the county.  The CRE (now part of the Equality and Human Rights Commission) has asked to include the projects in their database of examples of good practice.

Arun Kang, Chief Executive said, "This is great news for WREP, which has only been around for the last 18 months.  Hopefully this will build our reputation as an organisation that supports victims of discrimination and is committed to assisting public agencies in meeting their general duty in eliminating racial discrimination and promoting race equality."
